Mr Robinson’s Weekly Letter | Spring Term | End of Week 6

Posted: 10th March 2025

Dear Greenfield Families,

Half term is upon us but Little School carries on providing their glorious support for our youngest children and babies. I am delighted to report that we have two more babies in the community: congratulations to Mrs Becker and Mrs Charman, who welcomed baby boys this week. All four are doing well! We send much love to both families.

Meanwhile at school much has been going on, not least “Safer Internet Day” on Tuesday, during which Mr Lovejoy spoke to the children about staying safe online, and at the end of which we held the FRoGS- sponsored Children Smartphones and Apps evening. Over 140 people attended, representing about 20 different schools, and there was much interesting non-judgemental discussion of delaying giving one’s children smartphones and how best to support families who have already done so. The last thing I said was to remind parents that there is no law that says you need to give your child a smartphone when they’re 11 (or 10), Christmas etc. Within the audience were the leaders of the Woking Smartphone Free Childhood Group which will reconvene at Greenfield in March; for more info click here. Last night governors ratified the new Greenfield Smartphone policy, which I attach to this letter.

The FRoGS continue to make plans for this term and beyond (I heard yesterday that December’s panto was booked!) After half term we have the quiz and the disco -all the info is here. I look forward to seeing many of you at Parents’ Evening, should you visit us in-person first week back after half term. Mr Gudgeon has already been in touch with you today with the new Summer term extra-curricular clubs’ brochure. Please find some time to discuss what new opportunities and experiences your child may pursue after Easter. Before then, I can’t wait to witness my first ever “Greenfield’s Got Talent” for performers from Reception to Year 6; details to follow after the break. Much excitement ahead!

This week’s excitement has been due to outdoor break and lunchtimes being less bitter … and also because the children have, between them, represented the school in a Trivia takedown, competed in another swimming gala, basketball matches, tag rugby and football fixtures, experienced a dog safety-workshop which Hugo did not attend!, journeyed to the library on a Reception trip and learned about fire safety from the latest fire marshal visits, this time with Yr 2. No wonder everybody is ready for a break.

I hope that you all have a lovely week ahead and can find some time to play with your children inside and outside – you know I love those “children up tree” photos.

But for the evenings I have been asked for another board game recommendation so offer this time Qwirkle:

Is it dominos? Is it scrabble? Is it taxing, challenging and maddening in equal measure?
The Robinsons return to Qwirkle every now and again, as it’s soooo easy to play, but so hard to get right. One is faced with choice after choice every turn …

Happy half term.

 M. W. Robinson – Head
